As the 2016 Presidential Campaign kicks off, one candidate is attracting particular attention from the press and voters: Donald Trump. Regardless of your political views, Dallas Mavericks owner and fellow billionaire, Mark Cuban, has an interesting take on the Donald’s candidacy.
Cuban wrote that the Republican presidential candidate was, “probably the best thing to happen to politics in a long, long time.” Cuban’s reasoning is that Trump is breaking with traditional political practices by saying what is truly on his mind—good or bad. The notion being that Trump represents the potential for candidates who are not professional politicians, groomed for candidacy. Cuban stated that, “I don’t care what his actual positions are, I don’t care if he says the wrong thing. He says what’s on his mind. He gives honest answers rather than prepared answers. This is more important than anything any candidate has done in years.”
Cuban’s argument is that Trump’s campaign is ultimately benefiting voters by opening the political race up to people that are not traditional insiders. “Up until Trump announced his candidacy the conventional wisdom was that you had to be a professional politician in order to run. You had to have a background that was politically scrubbed. In other words, smart people who didn’t live perfect lives could never run. Smart people who didn’t want their families put under the media spotlight wouldn’t run.”
Trump has generated headlines with statements that accuse the Mexican government of sending its country’s criminals to the United States, questioning the war record of Sen. John McCain, and a series of perhaps misguided tweets. Cuban admits that, “I don’t agree with much of what he says, but I certainly know where he stands.” Whether or not Trump’s campaign will have a lasting impact on presidential politics remains to be seen, but the primary debates will certainly be interesting.
